On the Inside: Roomscapes of the Imagination

* images via Barneys New York

Barneys recently unveiled “Roomscapes of the Imagination” an installation designed by a group of interior designers: Joe Grillo, Peter Shelton and Benjamin Noriega Ortiz. Each designer was given a window to work with and told to let their imaginations fly. There seems to be a theme of print, pattern, and texture in the display design, which highlights the simplicity in the garments shown. Perhaps the print heavy trend that we have seen in apparel over the past years is making its way into interior design?

If you are in the neighborhood stop by and take in the view. Let me know what you think!

On the Inside: Leah Duncan

I am absolutely smitten with the work of Leah Duncan. This Austin based illustrator and surface designer has a fantastic way with layout and color and I found myself lost in her beautiful blog, Freshly Chopped. Be sure to check out her Etsy shop, which is filled with patterned prints, tea towels, pillows and more. Happy Shopping!

On the Inside: Byrdie Graphics

I have been considering wallpapering a certain wall for the past year or so (Yes, I am slow to move on home projects). But I am now leaning towards trying these removable wall decals from Byrdie Graphics, which can be found on Etsy. They have a beautiful selection of decals that have that wallpaper-like feel and I love the low commitment level to this option. What do you think? Have you tried removable decals in your home?

Update: Great News! Byrdie Graphics is offering a coupon to all Pattern Observer readers! Just use the coupon code BLOGGER15 at checkout for 15% off. Enjoy!

On the Inside: Millworks

Before ikat, before the “sketchy” look, my first textile design love has and will always be: BOLD LINES. I love a brushstroke with some meat on it and these designs from LA based, Millworks are totally speaking to me! Andrea Bernstein is the creative eye and design hand( as you can see in the photo) behind these textiles. After years in the industry, doing everything from knitwear design to becoming the head of design for a large textile mill, Andrea decided to branch out on her own and to design her own textiles. So, so glad that she did!

Andrea, what was the reaction when you branched out on your own?

I took our first collection to the Gift Show in NY and we were mobbed. It was great! I couldn’t believe that I had waited so long to follow my dreams.

What is the inspiration for your designs?

All the colors come from nature, but I electrify them. I start with collecting images of flowers, plants, leaves, really anything that interests me in nature. I take photographs to refer back to later and then return to my studio to paint. I tend to work at a very large scale so they can be difficult to scan.

I really love unusual flowers and combinations of flowers, leaves, and rocks, that may usually be overlooked. I love weeds and wild flowers.

Where can people buy your pillows?

We have a huge following in New England, particularly in Maine, New Hampshire, and Connecticut. So people can find us in stores around that area. We are also branching into California and will be showing at the California Gift Show.

Any suggestions for up and coming designers?

Yes. Follow your own style and do not work for a studio, it will ruin your identity as an artist.

Thanks Andrea!!! I am sure Andrea would be happy to help you find a store that carries her collection so just check out the Millworks site or call 213.629.1077 for more information. Enjoy!

This is the beautiful apartment of Elettra Wiedemann and James Marshall, which was recently featured on vogue.com. The textiles and textures in the home are spectacular and I think it is a great example of using patterns in a simple, yet stunning fashion. You can see more photos from the home here.

On the Inside: Henry Road

One of my very first posts was about Henry Road and the way the head designer/founder, Paula Smail, beautifully combines patterns into pillows and other home decor items. You can check out the post here, but I wanted to highlight this wonderful brand once again. Paula recently launched a wonderful online journal, A Journey In Color, which highlights “places, objects and people that inspire; the process of creating and designing; of stocking the shop with great decorating and gift items; and of friends, neighbors and customers who share their laughter and dreams.” I love seeing the inspiration alongside the finished product, such as Henry Road’s line of African waxed pieces. Be sure to check out the entire journal here and the collection here.

I have been a fan of Henry Road for some time now, so I was delighted that Paula agreed to answer a few of my questions. Enjoy!

1. How did Henry Road begin? Did the design studio come first and then the store? Or vice-versa?

Henry Road is my dream job.  It’s my life.  It’s birth was a series of decisions, accidental thoughts and ideas that took a while to come to fruition as I figured out what I did and didn’t want to be doing.   Everything has been a learning process as this is a different world from my former life in corporate America.  In the end, I started out designing fabric and making pillows with a view to building a wholesale and online business.   At the time, a future option was possibly opening a store.

Once I got the business started, I moved the store idea way up as I quickly realized that my design aesthetic and interests were broader than the fabric design.  I also discovered that I need human contact and routine in my life and that I don’t do well working solo at home.  As a result the store is now the core of my business and is a blend of my fabric with art and things I love.  Putting the key in the lock and opening the door in the morning makes me happy.

2. I love the new Henry Road journal. What inspired this new endeavor?

Thank you for loving my new journal.   It’s called A Journey In Color as that has always been my tag for the company and my life. I was clicking through one of the great new online magazines one day when it occurred to me that I could do a scaled down version that was all about Henry Road.   I had expanded the last catalog we printed to be more than a line sheet and even though it was very popular with store customers, I couldn’t afford to print another one and had been grappling with an alternate solution.   I couldn’t get excited about just putting a catalog online as we already have a website and a blog.   This magazine is the perfect solution and I am loving doing it.  I can’t believe I didn’t think of it sooner.  Yes it’s more to do but it provides structure and deadline for things that need to get done anyway and allows me to hone and develop my styling, photography and creative skills which to me is beyond crazy fun.

3. How do you stay inspired? Do you think having so many facets to the business ( design studio, consultant service, store front) helps fuel your creativity?

I do find that action helps fuel creativity and that the different things I do all overlap and feed one another.   Business inspiration and focus comes from working on a variety of projects, from happy customers and from seeing other people succeed; as well as from the reality of having to pay bills every month.  On the creative front, inspiration is everywhere all the time whether I am out walking the dog, driving to work, paging through one of the gazillion interiors magazines I refuse to throw out, or looking at fabulous blogs like yours that are filled with beauty and interesting ideas. The bigger challenge for me is deciding what to act and focus on versus what to just enjoy.

Table Manners: Beat Up Creations

One of the first things that I did when I moved to Portland was to purchase a selection of quirky little plates and saucers from a local thrift store. I still have most of these dishes and just love having a variety of patterns and colors on the table. But I think my collection would be complete with these plates from Beat Up Creations. Angela Rossi, the creative eye behind the brand, makes these beautifully collaged pieces out of forgotten items. The hard part is deciding on a set..!

Living by the Pond

I love those painted floors!!! One day I will have a beach house with painted floors, one day, but until that time I will just admire the work of designer Christina Murphy and artist Christoper Rollinson. Isn’t that living room fantastic? This Oyster Bay home was featured on House Beautiful.com and highlights the use of bold patterns and fresh colors in a beach environment.

Pattern Jam

I love cow illustrations and my husband loves chairs with no arms. Why you ask? Because he is a guitar playin’ addict and apparently those pesky chair arms get in the way! So, I think we really need that cow chair seen above..and I actually love this whole collection. Anthropologie scores again!

Angie’s Secrets to Using Bold Patterns

One of my favorite aspects of blogging is the chance to meet so many talented people outside of my immediate design circle. I have met amazing textile, graphic, fashion, and interior designers from across the globe and it really fuels my passion to keep Pattern Observer skipping along!

I personally struggle with interior decorating, so I am especially in awe of these designers. I have no idea how they do what they do, but one of my favorites is interior designer Angie Hranowsky. She was featured in the latest issue of Lonny Magazine (FYI… an awesome resource) and you should really read the entire article, but below are a few of my favorite rooms…

Beautiful, Yes? She knows her stuff!!! So listen up, here are Angie’s secrets to using bold patterns:

1. Mix big and small prints

2. Make sure the patterns relate to the overall design of the space

3. Work within a color palette, but bring in contrasting colors where they work

4. Make sure you achieve balance. If you are using bold patterns, you may need to incorporate solids to keep a space from being over the top

5. Beware of using too many tiny patterns. They can easily make a space seem busy and a room feel smaller.

MonkiVintage

MonkiVintage is one adorable little Etsy shop. The curators specialize in mid century, danish modern, industrial, and vintage home decor. Those children’s blocks are absolutely adorable, but I am really inspired by the ink block sets. I love the mismatched fonts combined with the texture of the worn blocks…great graphic tee inspiration!

On the Inside: John Robshaw

These lovely pieces are all part of John Robshaw’s new store, Souk. The store consists of pieces made from John’s journeys across the world; pillows pieced together from amazing finds across Asia, vintage blankets made out of fabrics from here and there and these lovely block prints that John makes while in his workshop. How cool would it be to hang out in a workshop and play with hundreds of hand-carved blocks??? I would be in heaven! The first 3 pieces also have an interesting story:

“During block printing, the tables are covered with a white cotton cloth and the printers test the blocks. I then go and print some more patterns on top to make a record of my time in the workshop. These one-of-a-kind paintings add ambiance to any interior when hung from the wall.”  I love this!!!

St. Pancras Renaissance Hotel

I love ornately decorated spaces, so when I saw the Vogue article on the new St. Pancras Renaissance Hotel I knew that I had to share these photos with everyone! From the wallpaper to the most ornate molding that I have ever seen, details are abound in this newly restored hotel. Take a moment to soak in the beauty..I could not find any close-up shots, but if anyone visits this hotel after its official opening on May 5th please send some photos my way! Is there a certain hotel where you find inspiration??

On the Inside: Massucco Warner Miller

These perfectly patterned spaces are the work of Massucco Warner Miller, an interior design firm with offices in LA, San Fransisco, and Seattle. There are so many things that I love about this home…the combination of graphic wallpaper and ornately patterned pillows in the bedroom is a match made in heaven. These details, along with the wonderful colors and textures, give the the room an elegant, yet cozy feel. Another combination that I love is the abstract toile print and cameo pillows in the seating area.

The firm has a fantastic line of pillows, which you can purchase here. You can even have a custom cameo pillow made, which is a pretty cool gift idea!

On the Inside: Swarm by Leslie Oschmann

*images via anthropologie

So my love of chipped/worn paint continues with this amazing collection from Leslie Oschmann at Swarm. She reuses and repurposes artwork and furniture in such innovative ways. My favorite pieces are the plates that have an old canvas plastered on top..she takes two old pieces of artwork and turns them into something new, modern, and magnificent. In other instances she cuts out pieces from old oil paintings and sews fabric in their place. I love the surprise of something new and unique in a piece that otherwise would have been overlooked. You can see more of these limited edition pieces at anthropologie.com

On the Inside: dream library

I love the shot of this room designed by Todd Klein. The lines and colors of the furniture and pillows are so simple and comforting, which is perfect for the hectic backdrop of the bookshelves. I love bookshelves filled to the brim with books! On the left you can see a little ethic inspired print peaking into the shot. It is a touch of softness and femininity in the room. Lovely!

fred shand for anthropologie

These lovely pieces are from Fred Shand‘s exclusive collection for Anthropologie. The quilts and pillows were screened, painted, sewed, and quilted by artisans across the globe. The artisans’ signatures, as well as their locations, are on the back of each piece. You really cannot match the interesting textures that happen when fabrics are hand dyed or painted. They have more warmth and life to them..even via the worldwide web, these pieces just say so much. I love them!!!!! Thanks to both Fred Shand and Anthropologie for bringing such talented artists together!

“On the Inside” at godfrey park place

So my goal of this weekly “On the Inside” post was to learn more about interior textiles and to pinpoint the best way to use them. Simple, right? I have discovered that I love spaces with a plethora of textiles/ graphics/ paintings etc…this is no real surprise, but this week I was on the hunt for something a little different..something that opened my eyes a bit. and voila ! Angie Hranowsky! She is a Charleston, South Carolina based interior designer who has so many beautifully unique houses in her portfolio that it was difficult to pick just one for today’s post. But, what caught my eye about this house is the combination of bold, clean textiles alongside such textural and expressive pieces of artwork. and…..the colors, the colors are so unique! I think my favorite is the plum dining room with the graphic chairs and the hits of vibrant blue. yum…

angie also has a great new blog, check it out here.

The amazing pattern combinations in this bathroom are the work of interior designer and blogger Sara Gilbane. The contrast between the beautiful geometric window and the floral wallpaper took my breath away. Simple and elegant, yet interesting and a bit surprising!
