The Ultimate Guide To Repeats: Featured Alumni Julie Marriott and Lauren O’Kelley

With less than two weeks until the start of the next Ultimate Guide to Repeats Workshop, we are gearing up for the course by featuring some beautiful repeats created by our alumni. Today we are pleased to share the work of Julie Marriott and Lauren O’Kelley, created in the last UGTR Workshop in May. For more alumni work check out our new Pinterest board!

Featured Designer: Julie Marriott

Julie’s inspiration for these lovely designs was “the folk floral trend I spotted on runways, as well as European and Asian folk embroidery. I wanted to interpret the folk trend in a more whimsical, hand-drawn way, and explore some of its unique flower shapes.” Julie did an amazing job with these two repeats, a set layout, at left, and a tossed layout, right. But repeats did not always come easy to her. “Before I took the class, creating repeats seemed a mysterious, complicated process completely out of my reach. With the help of Michelle’s detailed how-to instructions and helpful critiques, I came away a much more confident designer. The repeat process isn’t intimidating now, and in the weeks following the class I put my first full pattern collection into repeat!”

Featured Designer: Lauren O’Kelley

Lauren found her way the The Ultimate Guide to Repeats Workshop on the recommendation of Lesley Merola, owner of hunt + gather studio, and found it to be “instrumental in my development as a textile designer. The course provided me the opportunity to improve my technical skills in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, and there was a significant improvement in my understanding of how to create great layouts and seamless technical repeats. I was encouraged to focus on my own style and techniques, and the camaraderie between classmates was wonderful. Most beneficial of all was the access to instructors Michelle & Chelsea, every step of the way. Although I have drawn designs for many years, my art has grown from a hobby to my prints being included professionally in the Indigo Show in New York just a few short weeks after completing the class. My prints will be available through hunt + gather studio.”
