The Ultimate Guide to Repeats

With an increasing number of agents, studios, and print-on-demand companies requiring professional repeats, textile and surface pattern designers must know how to put various pattern styles into repeat.

You can make these dreams a reality in our recently updated course, the Ultimate Guide to Repeats.
Through The Ultimate Guide to Repeats You'll Learn:
How to create repeats that flow easily with no apparent "lines."

Techniques for creating repeats in both Illustrator & Photoshop
Course Schedule
A Creative Approach to Repeats
After achieving a solid understanding of why repeats are so crucial to our industry in Lessons One, Two, and Three, you will begin to explore various repeat techniques through Lessons Four through Eight.
Starting in Lesson Four, you'll receive a trend-driven design brief focused on a particular pattern style. You are then encouraged to create a pattern concept and put it into repeat using the technique covered in that week's lesson. This course structure will provide you with a real-world experience, placing different repeat techniques to use while creating new artwork for your professional portfolio.
Lesson Schedule:
In Lesson 1, you'll learn what agents, studios, and clients are looking for when reviewing professional repeats and the most popular repeat styles.
In Lesson 2, you'll discover why we create repeats, how textiles are produced, and how various production methods affect our work as designers.
In Lesson 3, you'll learn how to critique your own repeats before sending them off to production.
In Lesson 4, you'll learn how to create repeats in Illustrator using Pattern Maker mode. You'll know which pattern styles are ideal for this technique and when you should use them.
In Lesson 5, you'll discover how to create complex repeats in Illustrator using the Transform method.
In Lesson 6, you'll see how you can put textural patterns into repeat in Photoshop.
In Lesson 7, you'll discover how to use the Pattern Preview mode in Photoshop to create complicated repeats in less time.
In Lesson 8, you'll explore a third method for creating motif-based patterns into repeat in Photoshop.
Repeat Challenge! In this final week of the course, designers are invited to submit their patterns to the Textile Design Lab team for a repeat demonstration. Our community manager, Chelsea von Hasseln, will choose one pattern and show the community how she would repeat them based on the pattern style and file organization.
