Hi there! I am thrilled to have a guest post today from Sara Poly, a wovens expert and enthusiast. Take it away Sara!
Spring 2012 is packed with lots of interesting wovens that have strong graphic qualities as well as more subtle patterns. Burberry used giant plaid repeats that are enhanced by the weave structure and are far more interesting than your standard twill windowpane. Woven stripes in the style of monk’s belt patterns as seen on Burberry’s runway or Marni’s block stripe designs are *very* trendy and can enhance that “indigenous culture” vibe seen at many of the season’s shows. Don’t forget about jacquards! And *please* don’t forget that it does not have to be the Native American designs that have gotten Pendleton back on the map! Louise Gray has some very playful animal print jacquards that make her silhouettes even more exciting. Always in style are ginghams. Marc Jacobs paired woven and printed ginghams with great success. False solids used by Roksanda Illinicic trick the eye into seeing a solid from a distance but the wearer of the garment has the joy of the simple pattern all to her sweet self. If you are unfamiliar with wovens or want to become something of an expert, I *highly* recommend picking up A Handweaver’s Pattern Book by Marquerite P. Davison. Happy drafting!
