Creating a Repeating Watercolor Floral

In this video I share my process for turning a watercolor floral into a 32cm halfdrop repeat using the new Adobe Textile Designer Extension for Photoshop. I recently learned these techniques from the talented Sherry London, who shared this process with our Lab members. Lab members can find the tutorials here.

In the second part of the video I use the new Object Selection tool in Photoshop, which is amazing! I then turn all these motifs into smart objects and build out my repeat using the new Adobe Textile Designer Extension for Photoshop.

As you can see, I spend a lot of time tweaking my motifs and making sure that I am avoiding unintentional lines within my layout and repeat. I included all of these minor changes to show you just how much work goes into each repeat.

Using this new extension makes me feel a bit like an old dog learning new tricks, but I can see how useful it will become to my workflow. If you would like to learn more about creating high quality repeating patterns you can get started with this free video training.

  1. Hi. It was really great to watch another designer at work within the new Adobe Textile Designer Extension. One question I have though – I also have Abobe Photoshop 2020 – but I cannot see the Object Selection tool in my tools palette? Is it a new addition? How do I get it?

Thank you so much for sharing this!

    1. Hey Sandra! One of our TDL members found the answer: “You have to go to “Edit” “Toolbar” and select “Restore Defaults”

      1. Hi Michelle, I have Photoshop CC 2018. I tried this ‘Restore Defaults’ in the hopes of seeing this Object Selection tool, to no avail. I realise you don’t work for Adobe, but do you suppose this means it’s not available to me at all? Emily

        1. Hey Emily! I think you’ll need to update to Photoshop 2020. I believe that it is a new tool.

  2. Hi Michelle,
I have the latest version of Photoshop 2020 CC and tried installing the Adobe Textile Designer beta app to no avail. It is a zxp file and even with the most current Adobe Extension Manager I was unabl. I reached out to Adobe for help but my e-mail was returned as undeliverable because I was not on the list. Do you have any suggestions for me?
    Thank you in advance.
    Dorothy

    1. Hey Dorothy! After logging into the Beta I would try to reach out through the forums or by clicking on the “contact beta admins”. I hope they are able to help you!

  3. Hi,
Brilliant video, it’s literally just what I need at the mo!
Does anyone know how to download the Texile Designer App though? The links on adobe don’t work anymore sadly 🙁
    Jess
