Designer Feature: Cheerful Patterns From The Printed Square Studio

Lena Morris is the designer behind The Printed Square Studio, a Berlin-based pattern design studio cultivating nostalgia through whimsical and cheerful artwork.

Before The Printed Square Studio days, Lena studied journalism in Hamburg, fashion in London, and textile design in Berlin, Paris, and Winchester. She discovered screen-printing during her studies in London and then found herself elbow deep in dye and soaking wet from washing screens in Philadelphia. Studying the printing process and how to make repeating patterns made her fall in love with patterns and textiles. After long stints as an in-house designer for several fashion and print design studios in London, she set up her freelance surface pattern business, The Printed Square Studio, in the summer of 2023.

A love of pretty pastels, vintage novelty prints, delicate florals, and retro typography is at the heart of her work. With this in mind, she designs playful patterns for fabric and wallpaper as well as kids’ and women’s apparel print. She also creates original illustrations for paper goods and stationery. Everything is designed on her sunny and plant-filled desk in Berlin’s Prenzlauer Berg, occasionally interrupted by her son in need of a cheesy sandwich. Lena just wrapped a new fabric collection and is excited about where her freelance career will take her next.

Lena’s designs have been featured on a wide range of products by companies worldwide. She thinks nothing is better than the lovely feeling of seeing your designs come to life and be worn or used in the real world. She has licensed and sold work to Ikea, H&M, Perry Ellis, Karina Dresses, Filippa K, and more. When she isn’t working on client projects or her design portfolio, Lena can be found attempting to sew (badly) and cooking…she is currently trying to master sauces. She also loves to walk around Berlin, a city with depressing history. After 10 years of living in Berlin, she still discovers new places to explore and historical sites to consider. Visiting Berlin’s numerous flea markets is a regular part of her weekend; she searches for mid-century collectibles and inspiration for new stories and trends.
