Marie Gardeski is an artist and illustrator based in Indiana, who creates the most fun and whimsical patterns out of her drawings, watercolor illustrations and doodles. She holds a BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art and an MFA from the Cranbrook Academy of Art.
“In college I learned how to create basic repeats with block printing, but it wasn’t until a couple of years ago that I really started to explore pattern design… In early 2013 I was developing a sculptural installation and wanted some cloth elements printed with specific patterns. Using Spoonflower I was able to create the exact textiles I had in mind (to make mini tents, pillows, quilts, etc). I have been sewing for almost as long as I’ve been drawing, so it was a wonderfully satisfying experience to finally be able to sew with my own fabric designs! I had so much fun creating patterns from my drawings and doodles that I just couldn’t stop… I began researching and experimenting to learn as much as possible about pattern design. Since then I’ve developed a range of fabrics, some of which are available through Spoonflower, others are used exclusively to create products for my shop Imaginary Animal.
Most of my design process happens in the studio with pencil, pen and watercolor on paper. I like my designs to retain a playful, hand-drawn quality, so I try only to use Photoshop for finalizing repeats and adding/tweaking color. My artwork and textile designs often share the same inspirations. My studio is full of plants, small animal figurines, antique dolls and tiny toys. I love drawing these elements/characters again and again, each time creating new expressions and personalities. I’m excited to continue developing my collection of whimsical patterns!”
