Cathy Westrell Nordström, of Studio Lilla Form, is a Swedish graphic designer turned surface pattern designer living in Stockholm with her husband and three small children. Having recently won Elizabeth Olwen’s Skillshare competition, Cathy is now working on her first contract as a surface pattern designer making baby bedding and other products for a Swedish company. She is also working on producing her own notebooks, cards and wrapping paper as well as creating prototypes for a future cushion collection. Finding her inspiration in nature and all things floral, Cathy usually walks around in her garden or the woods outside Stockholm looking for new motifs to draw.

“When starting a pattern I always draw by hand with a black pen or paint with black gouache or watercolor before scanning the motifs and importing them in to Illustrator. When doodling and drawing in my sketchbook I like to use color and Sharpies, but as I tend to do all of my work in Illustrator I always opt for black drawings before scanning. I do love to paint but I haven’t mastered pattern making in Photoshop yet and I get so frustrated every time that I quickly go back to my beloved Illustrator. Learning Ps well is definitely on my to do list, just not right now. Color is of major importance to me, as it is for all designers. I love browsing Pinterest and Instagram for color inspiration.”
