Featured Designer: Belinda Marshall

Quilt Market is taking place in Portland this week and I will be attending for the first time (yeah!). I am excited to see what the quilt world is up to, but I am also excited to have the opportunity to “talk patterns” all day long.

Earlier in the week I was having dinner with a client and we were discussing how competitive the quilt market has become. To stay ahead, manufacturers have to constantly be on the lookout for original, unique patterns that are truly special. To me, “special” work evokes some kind of emotion (in commercial art the emotion should usually not be negative-but there is always a time and a place for that as well). When I first saw the work of today’s featured designer, Belinda Marshall, I immediately felt a strong swell of emotion and recognized that I was seeing something truly special.

Belinda is a self-taught artist and surface designer living in Melbourne, Australia. She works in a variety of mediums from paints to collage and describes her work in such a lovely way:

“I use layers of abstract blocks of colour and sections of representation in varying degrees of simplicity or detail to share this world ~ leaving out what isn’t relevant to the mood of the work and focusing only on what resonates and draws me in. My intention is to communicate my experience of the environment, even if embellished or highlighted to some degree ~ how it feels to be struck by the detail of one kangaroo paw flower and then also how it feels to walk through a mini forest of fully grown kangaroo paw plants. The surprise of discovering combinations of shapes and colours in a local front yard and what it might say about the person who put it together that way.

My work is also a form of meditation ~ it’s a necessary process that connects me to my self and the world of possibility. Observing beautiful things and trying to express that beauty in my work lifts me into a habit of finding more beauty and more meaning. By surrounding myself with things of beauty and meaning I can feel more grounded and happy.”

Best of luck to all who are at Quilt Market or Surtex this week. May you all leave with new contacts, contracts and lessons learned!

Behind the scenes at milleneufcentquatrevingtquatre

- Interview by Chelsea Densmore

Today we are excited to share an interview with Amélie Charroin and Marie Colin-Madan, the design duo behind the French scarf label milleneufcentquatrevingtquatre. Amélie and Marie became friends at school, and decided to start the brand a few years after graduating. Together they have developed a beautiful, trend-forward collection that was recently presented during Paris Fashion week. Read on to learn a little more about their line and be sure to check out their website to see more fabulous work!

The milleneufcentquatrevingtquatre atelier.

1. What is a typical day like at your studio? Do you work closely together or do you each focus on different areas of the business? Do you have a team helping out or do the two of you do everything yourselves?

We do the most we can by ourselves helped by green tea!!

Most of the time we work closely together on the same big desk and share everything, focusing sometimes on the same things and other times different…

But we have a great team too!! A wonderful photographer Maxime Ballesteros based in Berlin, an amazing web designer Alexis Gaillard based in Tokyo, clever boyfriends and very good friends!! :)

2. Can you tell us a little about your design process? What is your favorite medium to work in? Do you prefer to work digitally or paint/draw by hand (or a combination of both?)

We love working by hand, mixing techniques. But yes it’s a combination of digital and manual.

3. What would you consider to be your most proud accomplishment so far?

That you can find milleneufcentquatrevingtquatre scarves around the world.

4. Could you talk a bit about your experience presenting at Paris Fashion week? What were the most memorable moments for you?

We met new wonderful designers! Sometimes people from brands that we loved and followed for a long time. That’s one of the best things!!

5. What are your favorite sources for design inspiration? Favorite print & pattern trends? Do you subscribe to any trend services and if so, how does this influence the way you design?

We never subscribe to any trend services. Some blogs that we follow feed us a lot. Everyday life is a very good source of inspiration too, movies, concerts, exhibitions, books, food!! :)

6. Do you have any advice for aspiring designers hoping to break into the textile field?

Try to open new paths. Find your own history, aesthetic…

Feature Designer: Kindah Khalidy

Hello there! I hope that your week is off to a fantastic start! I am pleased to feature the work of Kindah Khalidy, a painter and surface designer working in California. Kindah received her BFA degree in painting, drawing and textiles from California College of the Arts in 2011 and creates the beautiful limited edition ready-to-wear clothing and accessories that you see above.

“For this collection, I was really trying to think about imagery that stood out and also the color palette of the arrangements that I was making when I first started creating things. I attempted to think back to some of those early environments that I was making and to translate those concepts into sophisticated designs. Textiles are a unique way to bring pieces of ideas with you in the form of functional objects. I love how cross cultural their meanings are. A wrap or shawl is something so versatile in what it can be used for and how it is worn all over the world. I like the idea of people of all different backgrounds making my textiles their own.”

Kindah’s beautiful pieces can be purchased through her online store and I think they are a total steal considering the artistry that goes into creating each piece. Stop by her store or website and say hello!

525

work by: (top right) Brandon Walsh, (bottom left) Edmund Holmes

work by: (top left and bottom right) Sarah Laws, (top right and bottom left) Karla Englehardt

Last month, Ken and I took Ruth to her first art show at Union Pine, a beautiful gallery space here in Portland, Oregon. The show, called 525, was “Nike’s first ever, completely unsanctioned, super secret, invite only pop-up shop” and consisted of the “personal work of thirty Nike designers ranging from screen prints to paintings to jewelry to even baked goods.” It was wonderful to meet all the designers and to discuss the differences between their Nike work and their personal creations. They are a truly passionate and inspiring group of designers and if you are looking for a few last minute gift ideas be sure to check out their websites. Enjoy!

Happy Friday!!! I am delighted to wrap up this week with these textural pieces from today’s featured designer, Marina Molares. Marina graduated from the University of Leeds in 2005 and is currently creating something everyday: painting, drawing, collaging, taking photos and working as a freelance graphic and surface designer. I was really drawn to the raw, organic pieces in her collection, but she also is one amazing collage artist! To see more of Marina’s work please check out her website or Spoonflower shop.

It has been such a fun week here and thanks for all your positive feedback and sharing your goals and dreams for 2013. These inspiration gems will come in handy next season when you are designing tropical florals in the midst of a winter storm!

Feature Designer: Amy Sia

Some of you may remember Amy Sia from her majestic tropical-inspired collection, which was featured in February (click here to read that post). It is definitely one of my favorite posts of the year, so I was delighted to learn that Amy recently launched a scarf line that aims to be individual and affordable.

“I love bold colors, painterly and abstract designs and the line reflects this. The scarves, which are made in the UK and are 100% silk, are created through a blend of modern and traditional techniques. The designs are often created using a combination of painting, drawing, photography and computer aided design and are then printed digitally.”

The scarves are currently sold on a made to order basis and you can see the full line on her website. Enjoy!

Feature Designer: Sanne van de Goor

These stunning pieces are the work of designer Sanne van de Goor who graduated with a degree in graphic design from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. Since graduation Sanne has worked in book design, graphic design and most recently entered the world of textile design. I was immediately drawn to the texture, movement and obvious passion seen in her work and I have a feeling the textile design bug has bitten once again! To see more of Sanne’s work please visit her website.

I know I was a little quiet this week, but I have an informative post scheduled for next week that I am really excited to share! It covers design calendars and will help you figure out which season to focus on based on your industry, style and customer. I spent this week wrapping up one big client project, starting another and updating the Sellable Sketch for CS6. Over the next few months I will be updating all the courses, which is a pretty big undertaking, but I feel that it is essential! Are there any tools in CS6 that you are just loving? I would love to hear your thoughts!

Have a great weekend!!!!

Featured Designer: Schatzi Brown

Today’s Featured Designer is the talented Tanya Brown, who designs under the name Schatzi Brown. Schatzi’s inspiration comes from her love of nature and being outdoors. She is a runner, biker, skier, and a surfer who loves quirky color combinations, hand drawn motifs, surf/skate/ski lifestyle brands & street wear. She also loves travel, anthropology, and researching different cultures for inspiration.

I was immediately drawn to Schatzi’s work and color usage, but her heart warming description of her love with print and pattern truly warmed my heart, “I think I have loved pattern since I was a child. I started drawing when I was three years old and never stopped. My favorite childhood memories include my crayon apron that my mom made me and, my multicolor ball point pen, magic changing color markers, & my spiral graph! All the signs were there pointing me to my passion for patterns, but I didn’t know it then.”

I couldn’t relate more! You can find more of Schatzi’s work over at her wonderful blog, Schatzi Brown.

I just wanted to remind everyone that the next Sellable Sketch class begins this Monday, May 7th! This is the last time that I will be teaching the class for quite sometime, since I have a baby arriving in August! The class will be offered as a self-study course, but if you are interested in the full course I encourage you to sign up today. Have a wonderful weekend!

Feature Designer: Anvita Jain

Happy Friday! Last night’s webinar was an absolute blast and a big thank you to all who attended and asked such wonderful questions!

Combining the right textures, patterns and colors is truly an art form. Anvita is a graphic artist / illustrator currently finishing her MFA at Cranbrook Academy of Art. She works in a variety of mediums ranging from collage, drawing, digital, textiles, sculpture and installation. She loves working on projects where her work can be applied to a number of different applications and products. This collage is part of the identity Anvita designed for an indian fashion label called Studio Petticoat specializing in contemporary traditional clothing. The identity and collage are composed of elements that inspire the designers of the label. The collage was then applied to their business stationary, preview invites, tags etc. To check out more of Anvita’s work, please visit her website. Have a fantastic weekend!

Happy Friday!!! I feel like I say that every Friday, but I just love the excitement of the upcoming weekend. Things are very busy around here, so I will be working, but I also have a girl’s outing planned and Ken and I are going to Giselle, one of my favorite ballets of all time.

I will also be sending out registration and course information for those of you on the Master Class waiting list. This course is very close to my heart and I am excited for the 20 students who will be joining me on this journey. The Master Class begins on March 19th and includes group chat/ feedback sessions, one-on-one coaching time, textile design tutorials and a few AMAZING guest speakers. The guest speakers will be focusing on their specialties: branding a business, working with agents and selling at print shows. If this sounds interesting then please sign up for the waiting list!

These amazing illustrations come from Claire Martin, a London-based freelance designer. Claire graduated with a degree in printmaking and has since entered the world of surface design. I am really drawn to the boldness of Claire’s work, which I believe stems from her printmaking background. This is just another example that any path can lead to a wonderful career in the surface design world! Designers with other experiences, backgrounds and interests often create the most compelling textile designs and bring a breath of fresh air to the industry! Textile Designer: Victoria Garcia

Have you recovered? I practically fell out of my seat when I saw these pieces so I’ll give you a second to regain composure. Ok..continuing..with the post

This AMAZING collection, entitled ‘SURROCODELIA’, was created by designer Victoria Garcia. Victoria is based out of Sydney, Australia, where she creates digital textile print designs for clients such as Ginger and Smart, Peter Alexander, Lisa Ho, Marnie Skillings and Karen Walker. Victoria is also currently a designer at Longina Phillips Designs, an Australia based print studio. This is one busy designer! In the designer’s own words…

“‘SURROCODELIA’ is an amalgamation of the art and aesthetic movements – Surrealism, Rococo and Psychedelia. I am deeply inspired by the idea of the ‘Wunderkammer’ also known as ‘Cabinets of Curiosity’, a concept which emerged in seventeenth century Europe, as people began to collect and display objects they considered to be special, unique or exotic. Sometimes referred to as the precursors of Natural History Museums, these rooms were fully immersive environments composed of objects that aimed to reflect and record the endless wonder of the world. A time before modern science had emerged, these objects were seemingly arranged in the room more for aesthetic effect rather than taxonomic reason.

I am fascinated by this period in time where society seemed briefly suspended between the romanticism of the Wunderkammer and the dawn of modern science. I feel the word ‘SURROCODELIA’ embodies my personal Wunderkammer – the world I try to bring to life through drawing, and all the things I love and collect – natural history, art history, the Australian bushland where I grew up, pattern and drawing.”

For more information on Victoria’s work please visit her website.
